Joint statement on the Green Claims Directive

Joint statement on the Green Claims Directive
press release
The FTAO, IFOAM Organics Europe, TIC Council and ISEAL urge policymakers to reach an ambitious agreement that curbs greenwashing, supports responsible businesses and meets the growing expectations of consumers.
18 June 2025

With the Green Claims Directive trilogue delayed to 23 June, the Fair Trade Advocacy Office, IFOAM Organics Europe, TIC Council and ISEAL, are calling on EU policymakers to finalise negotiations without further setbacks. Any delays or attempts to weaken the directive risk undermining trust, legal certainty, and the EU’s ability to combat greenwashing.

Misleading claims like “100% recycled plastic” continue to mislead consumers and create unfair competition due to a lack of clear rules and independent verification. The directive aims to fix this by ensuring all green claims are credible, substantiated, and trustworthy.

The proposed framework, developed with broad stakeholder input, strikes a fair balance between ambition and practicality. With growing consumer and business demand for transparency, now is the time to act. Postponement would mean missing a key opportunity to restore trust and drive real sustainability in the EU market.
