As the European Commission prepares a legislative proposal to review the UTP Directive, there is a significant window to strengthen its scope and effectiveness including by expanding the list of prohibited practices, making complaint mechanisms more accessible, and raising awareness of the Directive among non-EU suppliers who are often unaware it exists.

In close partnership with Oxfam-Solidarité Belgiu, the FTAO combines advocacy towards the European Commission, Parliament and Council with coordination of the Coalition Against Unfair Trading Practices, the creation of spaces for non-EU actors to feed into the policy debate, engagement with the EU Agri-food Chain Observatory (AFCO), and work to build synergies between the UTP Directive and the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD).

This initiative enables the FTAO to engage directly with EU decision-makers, continue strengthening coalitions among European and non-EU stakeholders, and conduct research connecting the UTP Directive to broader due diligence obligations. Ultimately, this initiative aims to ensure EU policymakers understand the perspective of smallholder farmers and that the revised Directive, expected at the end of 2026, delivers tangible improvements for producers beyond the EU's borders.
