Joint letter: Food Policy Coalition demands stronger EU Commitment to Sustainable Food Procurement
news
Ahead of the first "Food Dialogue" on 5 March, hosted by the European Commission and focusing on public procurement, 16 organisations representing local governments, farmers, public health groups, and more have sent a joint message to Commissioners Stéphane Séjourné, Christophe Hansen, and Oliver Varhelyi urging them to unlock the transformative power of the public plate.
24 February 2026

With public food procurement representing €50 billion annually across 250,000 authorities, the Food Policy Coalition is calling on the European Commission to recognise food as a strategic sector central to the EU’s sustainability, resilience, food security and competitiveness.

The signatories urge the Commission to make sustainability and quality the default in public food purchasing, introduce minimum sustainability standards, prioritise best value over lowest price, and simplify procedures without lowering social or environmental protections. The revision of the Directives is a key opportunity to unlock the transformative potential of the public plate for farmers, workers, consumers and the planet.

Endorsed by 13 participating organisations: CIWF, ClientEarth, Eurogroup for Animals, ECOS, European Environmental Bureau, European Heart Network, European Public Health Alliance (EPHA), Fair Trade Advocacy Office (FTAO), Fern, ICLEI, IFOAM Organics EU, Slow Food, The European Institute for Animal Law & Policy - together with Association for popularization of safe food, Skutečně zdravá škola and Skutočne zdravá škola.
